In a heartfelt message shared on social media, former Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy announced his medical retirement from football on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The decision follows a challenging recovery from a significant ankle injury sustained in 2023. McCoy, a standout player known for his resilience and dedication, expressed gratitude to his supporters and emphasized the importance of prioritizing his long-term health.

“It’s with a heavy heart but a feeling of gratitude that I share with you guys that I made the difficult decision to medically retire from football,” McCoy stated. “This has been one of the toughest decisions of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family, and people closest to me, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the right path for my long-term health and well-being.”

McCoy’s football journey began as a five-star recruit from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. He initially enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC) before transferring to the University of Tennessee. During his collegiate career, McCoy amassed 129 receptions for 1,592 yards and nine touchdowns over 35 games.

In 2023, McCoy suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle, an injury that required multiple surgeries and posed a threat to his playing career. Demonstrating remarkable determination, he returned to the field in 2024, recording 39 receptions for 472 yards and two touchdowns across 12 games. His comeback was not only a testament to his physical resilience but also his commitment to his team and the Knoxville community.(Reuters)

“As many of you know, I came back and played last year … -ending injury,” McCoy shared. “I felt it was my responsibility… importantly the community I have here in… to me.”

Although McCoy went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, reports indicate that teams were advised not to select him due to medical concerns. Despite this setback, McCoy remains optimistic about the future. He plans to focus on his health and engage in non-profit work, including involvement with “Huddle for Hearts,” an initiative aimed at supporting community well-being.
