In the early hours of today, the Chicago Bears organization confirmed the heartbreaking news of the passing of team legend Steve “Mongo” McMichael. A beloved figure in both the football and wrestling worlds, McMichael died at the age of 67 after a long and courageous battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
McMichael, who was diagnosed in 2021, had been fighting the degenerative neurological condition with resilience and dignity. McMichael played 13 seasons with the Bears (1981–1993), was a key member of the iconic 1985 Super Bowl XX championship team, and later became a popular figure in professional wrestling with WCW. He was recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024, an honor he sadly will not witness.
