Canadiens to Posthumously Honor Guy Lafleur as “Honorary Coach Emeritus” in Historic Tribute
Montreal, QC – May 3, 2025 — In a heartfelt and unprecedented tribute, the Montreal Canadiens announced today that franchise legend Guy Lafleur will be posthumously named “Honorary Coach Emeritus,” marking the first time in team history such a title has been bestowed. The announcement was made by head coach Martin St. Louis, himself a former NHL great, during a press conference at the Bell Centre.

Lafleur, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 70, remains one of the most beloved figures in Canadiens history. Revered for his electrifying speed, flowing blonde hair, and unforgettable wrist shot, Lafleur won five Stanley Cups with Montreal and remains the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. The new honorary role aims to permanently enshrine Lafleur’s spirit within the team’s culture and identity.
“This isn’t just a symbolic gesture,” said St. Louis. “This is our way of making sure Guy is still with us — in the room, on the bench, in the hearts of every player who puts on that jersey. His legacy is not in the past. It lives with us every day.”
The title of Honorary Coach Emeritus will include a permanent presence in the Canadiens’ locker room: a custom stall adorned with Lafleur’s iconic No. 10 jersey, his skates, and a commemorative plaque. Additionally, a pre-recorded motivational message from Lafleur — captured during a 2019 team visit — will be played in select moments during the season, including the home opener and playoff games.
The Lafleur family, present at the ceremony, expressed deep gratitude for the tribute. “This honor means the world to us,” said Lafleur’s son, Martin Lafleur. “Dad always said his heart belonged to this team and this city. Now, a part of him will always be here.”
Fans and former teammates applauded the move, which further cements Lafleur’s place not only in Canadiens history but in the very soul of the franchise. “Guy wasn’t just a player,” said Hall of Famer Larry Robinson. “He was magic on ice — a symbol of what it meant to be a Montreal Canadien.”
The Canadiens will officially unveil the tribute before their 2025–26 season opener, with a special pregame ceremony expected to draw thousands. As the Canadiens look toward the future, they do so with a timeless legend forever by their side.
