Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland officially confirmed the signing of a 6-foot-5 shooter from Huntersville
The signing of transfer guard Donovan Atwell, who will join the Red Raider team for the 2025โ26 season following three years at UNC Greensboro, has been formally confirmed by Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland.
Atwell, a 6-foot-5 shooter from Huntersville, North Carolina, will play at Texas Tech in the 2025โ2026 season with one season left to be eligible. Throughout his career, he has participated in 95 games and recorded 907 points, 215 3-pointers (39.4%), 225 rebounds, 56 assists, and 53 steals. Atwell, who has started for the Spartans for the last two seasons, just finished his junior year with an average of 13.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.00 3-pointers made per game, with 96 3-pointers (39.8%).
Atwell was 6-for-7 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line in the game against Chattanooga, scoring a season-high 28 points. Throughout the season, he started all 32 games and scored in double figures 22 times. In addition, he had four games with 20 points or more. He scored 27 points with four 3-pointers against North Florida and 21 points with five 3-pointers against Virginia-Lynchburg.
During the season, Atwell made four or more 3-pointers in 15 games and finished 96-for-241 (39.8%) from 3-point range. His 96 3-pointers placed 43rd overall in collegiate basketball, while his 3.00 3-pointers per game placed third in the conference and 34th nationally.
Atwell has averaged 9.5 points per game and is 215-for-545 (39.4%) on 3-pointers in his first three seasons. During the 2023โ24 season, he averaged 11.4 points per game as a junior and was 93-for-220 (42.3 percent) on 3-point tries. He has averaged in double figures for the last two seasons. After serving as a reserve in his freshman season, Atwell started 33 games in his sophomore year. He finished his first collegiate season with 30 games played off the bench, 3.5 points per game, and a 26-for-84 shooting percentage.
After Texas Tech advanced to the 2025 NCAA Tournament Elite 8, Atwell is the third player to sign with the school this summer. He comes after LeJuan Watts, who joined the Red Raiders on April 16, and Tyeree Bryan, who joined on April 9 after spending the previous two seasons at Santa Clara, where he averaged 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals, and 2.06 3-pointers per game. Watts, a junior, averaged 13.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game while playing for Washington State the previous season.
With a 15-5 conference record and a 28-9 overall record, the Red Raiders finished second in the Big 12 standings last season. With a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Tech tied the program record and made it to its third Elite 8. The Red Raiders have made consecutive visits to the national tournament and are 51-20 over the last two seasons under McCasland.
