Texas Tech football has secured a significant commitment for its 2026 recruiting class with the addition of quarterback Stephen Cannon from Savannah, Georgia.

Cannon’s decision addresses a crucial need for the Red Raiders, providing a cornerstone for the future of the program.

Recruitment Process

The pursuit of Cannon intensified following the hiring of offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich on December 6, 2024. Recognizing the importance of securing a top-tier quarterback, Leftwich identified Cannon as a priority target. On February 6, 2025, Texas Tech extended an official offer to the Benedictine Military School standout. Cannon, appreciative of the interest, has already scheduled two visits to Lubbock, underscoring his enthusiasm about the opportunity.

Player Profile

Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds, Cannon possesses the physical attributes desirable in a quarterback. His junior year statistics reflect his potential: despite missing five games, he completed 58.4% of his passes (87 of 149 attempts), amassing 1,352 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Demonstrating versatility, Cannon also contributed on the ground with 42 carries for 147 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Beyond football, he excels in track and field, setting personal records in the 100 meters, 110-meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdles, highlighting his athleticism.

Impact on Texas Tech

Cannon’s commitment is a strategic win for Texas Tech, offering a dynamic and multifaceted quarterback to build the offense around. His dual-threat capabilities align with modern offensive strategies, providing offensive coordinator Leftwich with a versatile asset. Cannon’s athleticism and leadership qualities are expected to make a significant impact on the Red Raiders in the coming years.

This commitment adds to the momentum of Texas Tech’s recruiting efforts, following a strong 2025 class that included 17 signees, such as quarterback Lloyd Jones III. The Red Raiders’ coaching staff continues to prioritize securing top talent, aiming to elevate the program’s competitiveness on a national scale.

Stephen Cannon’s commitment to Texas Tech represents a pivotal moment in the program’s trajectory, providing a promising quarterback to lead the team in the 2026 season and beyond.
