Carnival Confirms Purchase of Two Next-Generation AIDA Ships

April 7, 2025Carnival Corporation has officially confirmed the purchase of two new next-generation cruise ships for its AIDA Cruises brand, marking a significant step forward in the company’s sustainability and innovation goals. The announcement comes as part of Carnival’s long-term strategy to modernize its fleet and expand its offerings in the European market.

The two new ships will be built at the renowned Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with delivery expected in 2027 and 2028, respectively. These vessels will join AIDA’s existing fleet of modern ships and are expected to push the boundaries of cruise ship design and environmental responsibility.

Each ship will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), continuing AIDA’s role as a pioneer in green cruising technology. LNG is widely recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly fossil fuels available for marine transportation, significantly reducing emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. The ships will also include advanced energy-efficiency systems, waste heat recovery, and preparations for shore power connection to reduce environmental impact while in port.

Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, stated, “This investment underscores our commitment to the future of cruising — one that blends unforgettable guest experiences with a dedication to sustainability. AIDA Cruises continues to lead the way in innovation, and these next-generation ships will offer even more for our guests while reducing our carbon footprint.”

The new ships are expected to carry approximately 6,600 guests and will feature a wide range of onboard amenities, including expanded wellness areas, immersive entertainment options, and innovative dining concepts that blend local European flavors with global cuisine. They will also feature enhanced digital technologies for a smoother guest experience, from smart cabin features to app-based booking and onboard navigation.

Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises, added, “Our guests expect exceptional experiences and a strong commitment to sustainability. These new ships will deliver on both. We’re proud to once again partner with Meyer Werft to bring this vision to life.”

With this announcement, Carnival continues its trajectory as a global leader in cruise travel innovation, pushing the envelope in environmental stewardship while delivering world-class experiences to millions of travelers. The addition of these two new ships will bring AIDA’s LNG-powered fleet to six, further cementing its place as a trailblazer in the industry’s green transition.
