Cowboys Eye Explosive Second Wide Receiver to Complement CeeDee Lamb
As the Dallas Cowboys look to build a championship-contending roster under the leadership of head coach Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, one position remains at the forefront of the team’s focus: wide receiver. While CeeDee Lamb is firmly established as the team’s top option, the Cowboys are actively searching for a second explosive playmaker to bolster their receiving corps.
Cowboys Chief Operating Officer and co-owner Stephen Jones recently addressed the team’s approach to the wide receiver position, highlighting the importance of finding a dynamic second option behind Lamb.
“We’re still open to looking at a really explosive number two that could upgrade us,” Jones said during a media appearance. “But as I said, I like our room and certainly like the players we currently have.”
This statement underscores the Cowboys’ dual approach: while they are exploring external options to enhance the receiving unit, they also remain confident in their current roster, which includes a mix of established talent and promising young players.
The emphasis on adding an explosive second option indicates that the Cowboys’ front office sees an opportunity to further improve the offense, providing quarterback Dak Prescott with more weapons to target in the passing game.
Thus far, the Cowboys’ only significant external addition to the wide receiver room has been the signing of Parris Campbell, a former Indianapolis Colts wideout.
Known for his blazing speed, Campbell brings an element of explosiveness that the Cowboys hope to utilize, especially in creating mismatches against opposing defenses.
However, Campbell’s production in recent seasons has been inconsistent, with only 134 receiving yards over the past two seasons.
While his physical traits are undeniable, Campbell will need to demonstrate he can stay healthy and be a more consistent contributor in 2025.
Beyond Campbell, the Cowboys will look to other players such as Michael Gallup and Jalen Tolbert to step up. Gallup, who had a solid start to his Cowboys career before a knee injury derailed his 2022 campaign, has the potential to be the second option the Cowboys are seeking if he can regain his form. Tolbert, a 2022 third-round pick, is also viewed as a developmental player with high upside, though he has yet to make a major impact.
As the offseason progresses, it remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will make a splash signing or trade to bring in a proven veteran wide receiver. However, Jones’ comments suggest that the team is still evaluating options and will not rush into any decisions.
Ultimately, the goal is clear: to give Prescott a diverse and potent receiving corps that can take the offense to new heights in 2025.
