In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NHL, the Colorado Avalanche have reportedly acquired elite defenseman Miro Heiskanen from the Dallas Stars in a pre-deadline trade. This acquisition underscores Colorado’s determination to bolster their defensive lineup as they gear up for a deep playoff run.
Heiskanen, 25, has been a cornerstone for the Stars since being drafted third overall in 2017. Known for his exceptional skating, defensive acumen, and offensive contributions, he has consistently been among the league’s top defensemen. In the 2024-2025 season, Heiskanen has tallied 45 points (10 goals, 35 assists) in 65 games, averaging over 25 minutes of ice time per game.
The trade details are still emerging, but sources indicate that the Avalanche have sent a package including young defenseman Bowen Byram, a 2025 first-round draft pick, and a conditional 2026 second-round pick to Dallas in exchange for Heiskanen. Byram, 23, has shown significant promise since being drafted fourth overall in 2019, making him a valuable asset for the rebuilding Stars.
This move comes on the heels of other significant transactions by the Avalanche. Earlier this season, Colorado traded forward Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in a blockbuster three-team deal that also involved the Chicago Blackhawks. In return, the Avalanche received winger Martin Necas, center Jack Drury, and multiple draft picks.
