Alabama Board of Trustees Approves New Coaching Contracts, Bolstering Crimson Tide Staff

The Alabama Board of Trustees recently approved new contracts for several key members of the Crimson Tide football staff, including a significant pay raise for multiple coaches. The move further solidifies Alabama’s position as one of the most financially invested programs in college football, with five assistant coaches now earning $1 million or more.

At a meeting held on Friday, the Compensation Committee of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees finalized deals for a total of 10 coaches and staff members. A major focus of the meeting was on new contracts for Kalen DeBoer’s coaching staff, which included the promotion of Chuck Morrell to linebackers coach. Morrell’s promotion was accompanied by a well-deserved pay bump, reflecting his growing importance within the staff.

Among the most notable moves were the new contracts for offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and defensive backs coach Jason Jones. Grubb, who was hired to lead the Crimson Tide’s offense, signed a two-year deal valued at $1 million per year, solidifying his position as one of the highest-paid assistants. Meanwhile, Jones, the newly hired defensive backs coach, secured a two-year contract with a starting salary of $250,000 in year one and a salary increase to $450,000 in year two.

Grubb’s $1 million contract brings the total number of Alabama assistant coaches earning seven figures to five, joining Kane Wommack ($1.7 million), Nick Sheridan ($1.45 million), Freddie Roach ($1.2 million), and JaMarcus Shephard ($1.1 million). This financial commitment underscores the university’s dedication to maintaining a championship-caliber coaching staff.

In addition to these new contracts, two key assistants, Jeff Allen and David Ballou, were given three-year deals, ensuring stability in critical areas like strength and conditioning. General Manager Courtney Morgan also saw his salary increase, rising from $825,000 in year one to $875,000 in his second year, further emphasizing Alabama’s commitment to supporting its staff across all aspects of the program.

Interestingly, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan were the only two on-field assistants who did not receive new contracts during this meeting. While this may raise questions, the overall focus on reinforcing the coaching staff with substantial pay raises for key assistants indicates Alabama’s continued push to maintain its elite status in college football.

With these new contracts in place, Alabama’s coaching staff is poised to continue driving the program toward success as it builds for the future.
