The procedure was performed on March 26, 2025, by Dr. Riley J. Williams, Chief of Sports Medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Irving sustained the injury during a game against the Sacramento Kings on March 3, 2025. Despite the severity of the injury, he displayed remarkable resilience by returning to the court to complete his free throws before exiting the game.
Prior to the injury, Irving was having a standout season, providing leadership and stability to the Mavericks, especially following the departure of Luka Doncic. His performance had been instrumental in positioning the team for a solid playoff run, and he was being considered for All-NBA honors.
