Brendan Gallagher Honors His Late Mother After Scoring Emotional Goal
Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens recently opened up about the emotional journey he’s been navigating since the loss of his mother, Della, earlier this month. Della passed away after a long battle with stage 4 brain cancer, a fight that lasted over two years. Despite the grief, Gallagher has found a sense of comfort and strength through hockey, drawing on the lessons and love his mother imparted to him throughout her life.
Gallagher, visibly emotional, pounded his heart and looked skyward after scoring a goal during a game earlier this week. He later revealed that this gesture was a tribute to his mother, who had been a significant influence on his life, particularly in shaping his love for sports and competitive nature. “Everything I am is from her,” he shared with reporters. “She was so strong, so courageous, and, really, just the best mom.” He also expressed how much he will miss her, but that she will remain in his heart every day.
Della Gallagher had been diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2021, and doctors initially gave her six to 18 months to live. Despite her prognosis, she fought bravely, inspiring her family and friends with her determination and strength. Della passed away while the Canadiens were on a road trip, just before they played the Calgary Flames on March 8. Her death left a deep impact on Gallagher, who has been coping with the loss in both personal and professional ways.
During this difficult time, Gallagher has found solace in his team, with the Canadiens providing much-needed support. The team made an unexpected gesture, arranging a 45-minute bus trip to Gallagher’s family home while they were in Vancouver on March 11. “They’re helping us get through it. They’re a huge part of it,” Gallagher said, acknowledging the role of his teammates and the organization in supporting him during such a challenging period.
Despite the sorrow, Gallagher also found joy in the recent arrival of his daughter, Everly Mona Della Gallagher. Her name is a tribute to her grandmother, and Gallagher shared that his daughter will grow up knowing the powerful legacy of the woman who shaped his life. “She’ll be proud to carry that name,” Gallagher said, finding comfort in the continuity of family.
Gallagher’s recent performances on the ice, including his empty-net goal in a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators, have been tinged with bittersweet memories of his late mother. The goal was scored just a day before her funeral, and Gallagher admitted that the moment was especially poignant, as he realized he would no longer be able to share these milestones with her. His mother’s memory, however, will continue to guide him both on and off the ice.
