Alex Ovechkin Partners with V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer to Raise Funds for Pediatric Cancer Research
As Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of hockey history, he’s making a lasting impact beyond the rink. The 39-year-old veteran forward, who is just 11 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record of 894 goals, has announced a partnership with the V Foundation for Cancer Research and Hockey Fights Cancer. This collaboration aims to raise funds for pediatric cancer research, aligning with Ovechkin’s pursuit of the NHL’s career goal-scoring title.
In a statement shared by the team, Ovechkin expressed his commitment to using his platform for a cause close to his heart. “Throughout my NHL career, I have met many brave kids battling cancer, and I feel it’s important to do what I can to help save more lives from this horrible disease,” Ovechkin said. “I want to thank the V Foundation for all their hard work, and I look forward to using my platform and doing anything I can to help further the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer’s mission.”
Starting with Wednesday’s game against the New York Rangers, Ovechkin has pledged to make a donation equal to his career goal total each time he scores for the remainder of his career. His total donations will be matched by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Washington Capitals. This initiative aims to raise significant funds for pediatric cancer research, a cause Ovechkin has long supported throughout his career.
Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, expressed his enthusiasm for Ovechkin’s involvement, saying, “Alex Ovechkin’s summit to greatness on the ice has been a thrill for all hockey fans, and his commitment to funding innovative pediatric cancer research will make a lifesaving impact for years to come. We are thrilled to have Alex on our team. We look forward to celebrating his accomplishments and celebrating advancements in cancer research together.”
Ovechkin’s partnership with these organizations comes as he closes in on one of the most prestigious records in all of sports. Despite a setback earlier this season, when a broken leg sidelined him for 16 games, Ovechkin has continued to perform at a high level, with 31 goals already this season.
The collaboration between Ovechkin, Hockey Fights Cancer, and the V Foundation highlights the power of sports figures to make a difference off the ice. With this initiative, Ovechkin hopes to not only achieve greatness on the rink but also help fund life-saving research for children battling cancer, further solidifying his legacy as a player and philanthropist.
