In a series of strategic roster moves, Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has focused on reshaping the team’s defensive lineup, particularly concerning cornerback Kyler Gordon and defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker.
Kyler Gordon’s Anticipated Contract Extension
Kyler Gordon, drafted by the Bears in 2022, has emerged as a pivotal player in the secondary. Over his three seasons, he has consistently ranked among the team’s top defenders in solo tackles, passes defended, interceptions, and fumble recoveries. His performance in 2024 earned him recognition as Pro Football Focus’s most improved Bears defensive player, achieving a career-high grade of 76.0, placing him 11th among NFL cornerbacks.
With his rookie contract nearing its end in 2025, discussions about a contract extension have gained momentum. General Manager Ryan Poles emphasized the importance of retaining homegrown talent, stating, “It’s always a priority to re-sign your own, and Kyler has done a really good job over the last few years making plays and impacting the game.” Analysts project that Gordon’s extension could be a three-year deal valued at approximately $33 million.
DeMarcus Walker’s Release
Conversely, the Bears have decided to part ways with defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker. Walker joined the team in 2023 on a three-year, $21 million contract, bringing versatility to the defensive front. Over two seasons, he recorded seven sacks, 32 quarterback hits, and 16 tackles for loss across 34 games. Despite his contributions, the Bears released Walker to free up $5.25 million in salary cap space, aiming to allocate resources more effectively in upcoming free agency and draft opportunities.
