JUST IN: LaDainian Tomlinson, Cowboys icons offer Shocking thoughts on Dallas’ Brian Schottenheimer Hire

Former Cowboys Players Weigh In on Team’s Direction Following Schottenheimer’s Hiring

During the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame induction on Saturday, two former Dallas Cowboys players, along with an ex-NFL standout, shared their thoughts on the team’s direction under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The comments came at a pivotal moment, as the Cowboys prepare for a new chapter with Schottenheimer at the helm.

LaDainian Tomlinson, the Hall of Fame running back who accumulated over 13,000 rushing yards in his illustrious career, expressed strong confidence in Schottenheimer’s ability to lead the Cowboys. Tomlinson, who played under Schottenheimer’s father, Marty Schottenheimer, from 2002 to 2006, praised the younger Schottenheimer’s preparation and experience.

“[Brian] has been prepared for this moment,” Tomlinson said. “I don’t think that’s what a lot of people understand. He’s been prepared for this moment. He’s gained a lot of experience coaching under some great coaches, and he’s learned all kinds of tricks of the trade, if you will.” Tomlinson’s endorsement highlights Schottenheimer’s coaching pedigree and his readiness to step into the head coach role after years of learning from top-tier mentors.

While Tomlinson was optimistic about Schottenheimer’s future in Dallas, Larry Brown, the Super Bowl XXX MVP and former Cowboys cornerback, remained more cautious. Brown admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect from Schottenheimer in his first year as head coach. “I’m interested in seeing how he implements his processes,” Brown said. “It will be fascinating to watch how he molds this team and brings his vision to life.”

In addition to Tomlinson and Brown’s insights, Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Pearson also shared his perspective, focusing on the continuity that Schottenheimer’s hiring brings to quarterback Dak Prescott. Pearson, a former Cowboys wide receiver, emphasized the importance of stability and consistency in the quarterback-coach relationship.

“I like the consistency of keeping Schottenheimer around Dak Prescott,” Pearson noted. “But I’d also like to see Schottenheimer bring some forcefulness to the team. That’s what we need—someone to grab these guys and make them accountable for what they have to do every day, not just on game days but throughout the week in preparation.”

Pearson’s call for discipline and attention to detail reflects a broader concern among Cowboys fans about the team’s ability to stay focused and execute consistently. He believes Schottenheimer could be the coach to instill that much-needed accountability, especially in high-pressure moments.

Schottenheimer officially took over as head coach in January, inheriting a team that has consistently been competitive but has yet to break through in the playoffs. As the Cowboys look ahead to the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Schottenheimer to see if he can elevate the team to the next level.
