BREAKING NEWS: Former Lions HC Matt Patricia Appointed as Ohio State Defensive Coordinator

In a significant move for college football, Ohio State University has appointed former NFL head coach Matt Patricia as its new defensive coordinator.

This decision comes after Jim Knowles, who led the Buckeyes to a national championship with the nation’s top defense, departed to assume the same role at Penn State.

Matt Patricia, 50, brings a wealth of experience to the Buckeyes. He began his NFL coaching career with the New England Patriots in 2004, initially serving as an offensive assistant before transitioning to defensive roles. By 2012, he was promoted to defensive coordinator, a position he held until 2017. During his tenure, the Patriots secured two Super Bowl victories and consistently ranked among the league’s top defenses.

Ohio State hires former Detroit Lions HC Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator

In 2018, Patricia took on the role of head coach for the Detroit Lions. Over nearly three seasons, he compiled a record of 13-29-1 before being dismissed in 2020. Following his stint in Detroit, Patricia returned to the Patriots in 2021 as a senior football advisor and later served as the offensive line coach in 2022. He then joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 as a senior defensive assistant. Notably, Patricia has not coached at the collegiate level since his time as an offensive graduate assistant at Syracuse University from 2001 to 2003.

Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, expressed confidence in Patricia’s appointment, highlighting his extensive NFL experience and defensive acumen as valuable assets for the Buckeyes. Patricia will be tasked with maintaining and enhancing a defense that was instrumental in Ohio State’s recent national championship run.

In addition to Patricia’s hiring, Ohio State announced internal promotions to bolster its defensive coaching staff. Secondary coach Tim Walton has been elevated to co-defensive coordinator, and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri has been named the passing game coordinator. These moves aim to provide comprehensive leadership and continuity within the defensive unit.

Patricia’s return to college football, especially at a premier program like Ohio State, marks a significant transition in his coaching career. His NFL pedigree and championship experience are anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the Buckeyes’ defense. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how Patricia’s strategies and leadership influence Ohio State’s performance on the field.

The Buckeyes are set to commence spring practices soon, providing Patricia with an opportunity to familiarize himself with the players and implement his defensive schemes. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this high-profile hire will impact Ohio State’s pursuit of consecutive national titles.

With Patricia at the helm of the defense, Ohio State aims to continue its tradition of excellence and uphold its status as a powerhouse in college football.
