BREAKING NEWS: Fiji Rugby Union Dismisses Director Over Controversial Remarks on Women’s Rugby

Fiji Rugby Chief Fired for Saying Women’s Team has a ‘Gay Problem’

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sacked former women’s national team captain Laijipa Naulivou from her role as Director of Rugby just four days into her tenure. The decision follows controversial remarks she made about the presence of LGBTQ+ players in rugby, which sparked widespread criticism.

Naulivou, the first-ever captain of the Fiji women’s national rugby team, recently spoke in an interview with the Fiji Sun, where she expressed strong disapproval of homosexuality in women’s rugby. She stated, “Those who played with me know that I do not condone being gay for women in rugby. I always speak against it, and I know I’m very unpopular in that area with those who practice it.” She further referred to homosexuality as a “gay problem,” linking it to the struggles of the Fijian women’s sevens team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they finished last.

Her comments triggered immediate backlash, prompting her resignation, which was then followed by the FRU formally terminating her appointment. In a statement on Wednesday, the FRU reinforced its commitment to diversity and inclusion, emphasizing that Naulivou’s views did not align with the values of the organization.

“The views expressed by Laijipa Naulivou are her personal opinions and do not reflect the official position of FRU,” the union said. “Our women’s team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.”

The FRU also stressed that it “categorically rejects any form of discrimination” and affirmed its commitment to upholding “professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of Fiji Rugby.” The governing body further stated that a new appointment for the Director of Rugby position would be made through a “rigorous and transparent selection process.”

Naulivou’s comments have reignited discussions about inclusivity in sports, particularly within women’s rugby. Many international rugby federations, including World Rugby, have taken significant steps to promote diversity and create safe environments for LGBTQ+ athletes. Fiji Rugby’s strong stance against discrimination aligns with the growing global movement towards inclusivity in sports.

As the FRU moves forward with its search for a new Director of Rugby, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering an inclusive and respectful sporting culture, ensuring that all players, regardless of their background or identity, feel welcomed and valued within the game.
