But ever since that celebratory trip to Washington, the team has struggled mightily on the field. What was supposed to be a feel-good moment for the organization seems to have marked the beginning of a concerning downward spiral. Since that visit, the Red Sox have posted one of the worst records in the American League. Their pitching staff, which had been a surprising strength early in the year, has faltered. Starters are failing to go deep into games, and the bullpen has repeatedly let leads slip away. Lucas Giolito, once a steadying presence, has seen his ERA climb, and the once-reliable back-end duo of Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin has been anything but automatic. Offensively, the Red Sox have hit a wall. Key contributors like Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida have cooled off significantly, and the team is struggling to drive in runs with runners in scoring position. What was once a promising lineup filled with power and potential now appears inconsistent and uninspired. Injuries have also played a role. Trevor Story remains sidelined, and others have been in and out of the lineup, robbing the team of continuity. The lack of depth has been exposed, and younger players thrust into starting roles haven’t been able to carry the load. Manager Alex Cora has been visibly frustrated, and fans are beginning to lose patience. The momentum from their solid start to the season has completely evaporated. What’s more troubling is that the team doesn’t seem to have an immediate solution to halt the slide. Yet, amid the downturn, there are still a few bright spots. Rookie outfielder Roman Anthony continues to show flashes of brilliance, and Jarren Duran remains a spark plug at the top of the order. Additionally, Craig Breslow’s front office has stayed composed, resisting knee-jerk reactions in favor of long-term planning. Still, the reality is this: the Red Sox have looked overmatched and disorganized ever since their White House visit. If they want to salvage their season, something needs to change fast—before the hole becomes too deep to climb out of.

Crosby, 40, made the announcement on February 4, 2025, during his radio show, “The Mason Crosby Show,” expressing profound gratitude for his journey in professional football.

A Storied Career with the Green Bay Packers

Selected by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Crosby quickly established himself as a reliable and consistent presence on special teams. Over 16 seasons with the Packers, he became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, amassing 1,918 points. His tenure was highlighted by a Super Bowl XLV victory, where he contributed four extra points in the team’s 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Crosby’s consistency was evident in his field goal accuracy, achieving an 81.4% success rate by converting 395 out of 485 attempts. He also holds the distinction of being the first player in NFL history to kick a 50-yard field goal and a game-winning field goal with under a minute left in his NFL debut.

Brief Stints Beyond Green Bay

Following the 2022 season, the Packers opted for a younger direction at the kicker position, leading to Crosby’s departure. He briefly joined the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad in December 2023 but was released shortly after. Later that month, he signed with the New York Giants, appearing in three games before sitting out the entire 2024 season.

Reflecting on a Remarkable Journey

In his retirement announcement, Crosby reflected on his career, stating, “I think I’ve been putting this off for two years. So today, I make my official announcement to retire from the NFL.” He emphasized the significance of his time in Green Bay, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Packers’ legacy.

He also highlighted the importance of relationships formed throughout his career, thanking his wife, Molly, his family, teammates, and the fans. “Football is the ultimate team game, and I would not have played as long as I did without great teammates and support along the way,” Crosby remarked.

Crosby’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable era for the Packers and the NFL. His contributions on the field, leadership, and professionalism have left an indelible mark on the sport.
