Mike Tomlin Comments on Job Security and Steelers’ QB Issues Ahead of Next Season: ‘You Get What You Deserve’
As the Pittsburgh Steelers head into the offseason, Head Coach Mike Tomlin addressed a few key issues that have lingered throughout the 2024 season, including his job security and the ongoing struggles at the quarterback position.
In a candid interview, Tomlin expressed his views on the team’s performance and the steps required to ensure success in 2025.
First and foremost, Tomlin was asked about his future with the Steelers, a franchise known for its stability and reluctance to make swift coaching changes.
With the team failing to make a deep playoff run, the question of whether his job was in jeopardy loomed large. Tomlin, known for his calm demeanor and confidence, gave a straightforward response.
“You get what you deserve,” he said, reflecting his belief that the results of the season would determine the trajectory of his tenure in Pittsburgh.
“We evaluate our performance all the time, and that’s no different for me. We didn’t meet the expectations this year, and the results speak for themselves. But that’s the nature of this business. We need to go back, assess, and improve.”
Tomlin’s forthrightness also extended to the Steelers’ ongoing quarterback issues. After Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2022, the team has struggled to find a long-term solution at the quarterback position.
Kenny Pickett, the 2022 first-round pick, has shown flashes of potential but also faced inconsistency in his sophomore season.
The Steelers have been unable to establish a stable offensive rhythm, largely due to the growing pains of their young quarterback.
“The quarterback situation is what it is,” Tomlin acknowledged. “We’re developing a young guy in Kenny Pickett, and that comes with challenges. He’s learning, he’s growing, but it’s on us to put him in a better position to succeed. We’ve got to provide him with more support, and that’s the goal moving forward.”
Despite the frustrations surrounding the offense, Tomlin remained optimistic. He pointed out that the team’s defense, led by standout players like T.J. Watt, remains among the league’s best, giving the Steelers a strong foundation to build upon.
However, the coach stressed that finding consistency on offense would be critical in the team’s quest to return to championship contention.
Looking ahead, Tomlin’s focus is on addressing both the quarterback situation and the team’s overall performance. “It’s about taking ownership of where we are right now,” he concluded. “And that starts with the leadership, including myself. We have a lot of work to do.”
The Steelers’ front office will likely take Tomlin’s words to heart as they evaluate the team’s needs and future direction. With a pivotal offseason ahead, the focus will be on developing Pickett, strengthening the roster, and ensuring that 2025 is a bounce-back year for the franchise.
