In a blockbuster move that has sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals have signed three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt to a two-year contract worth $31 million, with $23 million guaranteed.

The signing marks a major step for the Cardinals as they aim to bolster their defense and position themselves as serious contenders in the NFC.

Watt, who was released by the Houston Texans earlier this offseason, quickly became one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. Despite offers from multiple teams, the 32-year-old defensive end chose Arizona, citing the team’s competitive roster and the opportunity to play alongside fellow defensive standout Chandler Jones as key factors in his decision.

“I’m excited to be joining such a talented team with so much potential,” Watt said in a statement. “I’ve watched this organization from afar, and I’m ready to contribute and help take us to the next level.”

During his 10 seasons with the Texans, Watt solidified himself as one of the greatest defensive players of his generation. His resume includes 101 career sacks, five Pro Bowl appearances, and five All-Pro selections. Beyond his on-field dominance, Watt has been a leader in the locker room and a pillar of the community, earning the 2017 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for his charitable work.

For the Cardinals, Watt’s arrival is a significant boost to their pass rush, which already features Chandler Jones, the franchise’s all-time sack leader. The pairing of Watt and Jones is expected to create havoc for opposing quarterbacks and provide much-needed stability to Arizona’s defensive front. Additionally, Watt’s presence will likely have a ripple effect, elevating the play of the entire defense.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury expressed his excitement about the signing, saying, “J.J. Watt is a game-changer. His leadership and work ethic are unmatched, and he’s the type of player who makes everyone around him better. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

The Cardinals finished the 2020 season with an 8-8 record, narrowly missing the playoffs. With Watt’s addition, the team hopes to make a strong push in the highly competitive NFC West, which includes powerhouse teams like the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers.

Watt’s decision to join the Cardinals signals his belief in the team’s potential and their commitment to building a championship-caliber roster. As the 2021 season approaches, all eyes will be on Arizona to see if this high-profile signing can help them rise to the top of the NFL.
