The Chiefs have strengthened their coaching team ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific season by appointing former All Blacks forward Jono Gibbes and ex-Fiji international Graham Dewes as assistant coaches for the 2025 campaign.
Both bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, joining head coach Clayton McMillan to shape the team’s preparations for the upcoming season. Jono Gibbes, 47, is well known in rugby circles, not only for his playing days as a standout All Blacks loose forward but also for his impressive coaching credentials. Following a successful playing career, Gibbes transitioned into coaching, taking on roles with prestigious teams both domestically and internationally.
His coaching resume includes stints with Leinster, Ulster, and Clermont Auvergne in Europe, as well as a term as Waikato’s head coach in the National Provincial Championship. Gibbes previously worked with the Chiefs as a forwards coach, making his return to the franchise a homecoming of sorts. Renowned for his tactical acumen and ability to develop forward packs, he is expected to bring fresh insights and leadership to the Chiefs. Joining Gibbes is 42-year-old Graham Dewes, a former prop for Fiji who represented his country in 29 tests, including a memorable appearance in the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
Dewes made headlines during the tournament by scoring the decisive try in Fiji’s historic victory over Wales, which secured their place in the quarterfinals. Since retiring from professional rugby, Dewes has built a solid reputation as a coach, focusing on scrummaging and forward play. His technical knowledge and passion for set-piece mastery will be a valuable asset for the Chiefs as they seek to dominate the physical aspects of the game. Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan expressed his enthusiasm about the appointments, highlighting the unique blend of skills the duo brings to the team.
“Jono and Graham are two exceptional rugby minds with extensive experience across different levels of the game. Their contributions will undoubtedly strengthen our coaching group and help take our team to the next level,” McMillan stated.\n\nThe Chiefs are coming off a successful 2024 season and aim to build on that momentum with the addition of Gibbes and Dewes. The franchise’s commitment to investing in experienced coaching talent underscores their ambition to remain competitive in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. Fans eagerly await the impact of the new coaching lineup as the team prepares for the 2025 season.
