The stroke struck suddenly during a meeting at the Waratahs’ headquarters in Daceyville. Raiwalui was in discussion with Rugby Australia’s high-performance director, Peter Horne, and then Waratahs CEO, Paul Doorn, when the symptoms first appeared. Prompt action by his colleagues and immediate medical attention proved critical in saving his life.

Raiwalui’s condition was severe enough to warrant a two-month hospitalization, a period he describes as a challenging yet transformative time. “It was a wake-up call, a reminder of how fragile life can be,” he said. “The care I received from the medical teams and the support from my family, friends, and the rugby community have been incredible.”

The former lock’s rugby career spans decades, both as a player and a coach. Raiwalui earned 43 caps for Fiji between 1997 and 2006, before transitioning into coaching and administrative roles. Most recently, he served as the head coach of the Fijian national team, where he guided them to a historic victory over the Wallabies during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Saint-Étienne. The win was a defining moment for Fiji and a testament to Raiwalui’s leadership and strategic acumen.

His transition to the Waratahs was seen as a significant step for the Super Rugby franchise, bringing in a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective. Despite the setback, Raiwalui remains optimistic about his role with the team. “This has only strengthened my resolve to contribute to the Waratahs and to rugby in general,” he stated.

Raiwalui’s journey has resonated with many in the rugby community, highlighting the importance of health awareness and prompt action in medical emergencies. His story serves as a reminder that even the strongest among us can face unexpected challenges and that resilience and support are key to recovery.

As he continues to regain his strength, Raiwalui is looking forward to resuming his duties with the Waratahs and making a lasting impact in the world of rugby. His return is eagerly anticipated by players, staff, and fans alike, who see him as a cornerstone of the team’s future success.
