Detroit Lions Consider Adding Quarterback Depth Ahead of Thanksgiving Clash
The Detroit Lions are riding high with a stellar 10-1 record heading into their Thanksgiving matchup against the Chicago Bears. However, with injuries mounting and the need to prepare for the long haul, head coach Dan Campbell and his staff are exploring all options to bolster their roster.
One intriguing possibility? Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who recently hit the open market after being released. During a press conference on Tuesday, November 26, Campbell was asked about the Lions’ interest in the free-agent signal caller.
“We haven’t really talked about that,” Campbell said. “The name has come up, but it’s not like we’ve sat down and talked. So, I don’t want to give you a yes or no.”
Campbell’s response, while noncommittal, leaves the door open for speculation. He neither confirmed nor denied the Lions’ interest in Jones, which has fueled rumors about whether Detroit could make a move to bring in the veteran quarterback as added insurance behind starter Jared Goff.
Hendon Hooker’s Development Key for Lions
While the Lions weigh their options, Campbell was quick to highlight the progress of backup quarterback Hendon Hooker. The rookie, who has been working his way back from an ACL injury, has shown steady improvement in practice.
“He’s progressed,” Campbell said. “We’ve told him from day one, ‘We just need growth. We need you to grow every week.’ And we’ve given him opportunities in practice, good on good, to run our offense and, as much as we can, putting him under pressure, we’ve done that.”
Hooker’s development remains a crucial part of the Lions’ long-term plan. However, with the postseason in sight and Goff dealing with the typical wear and tear of a long season, adding a seasoned quarterback like Jones could provide valuable depth and experience.
A Potential Fit for Jones?
Daniel Jones, who was once seen as the future of the Giants’ franchise, now finds himself looking for a fresh start. Despite his struggles in New York, Jones’ mobility and experience could make him an intriguing backup option for Detroit.
For now, the Lions remain focused on their Thanksgiving showdown, but it’s clear they’re leaving no stone unturned as they prepare for a potential deep playoff run. Whether Jones joins the fold remains to be seen, but Detroit’s proactive approach highlights their commitment to staying ahead of the curve.
