“Tyrique Stevenson Apologizes After Costly Mistake in Bears’ Last-Minute Loss to Washington”
Chicago’s last-second loss to Washington on Sunday was especially tough for Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.
A video of Stevenson, a second-year player, went viral after he taunted D.C. fans while facing away from the field as Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels took the snap. He then raced to the end zone crowd, where he leaped and tipped the ball to Noah Brown, sealing Washington’s 18-15 win.
Stevenson didn’t speak to the media post-game but later posted an apology on social media.
“To Chicago and my teammates, I apologize for my lack of awareness and focus,” he wrote. “The game isn’t over until the clock hits zero. Lesson learned, and I’ll improve.”
According to Next Gen Stats, Stevenson allowed four catches for 90 yards on nine targets as the closest defender on Sunday. The Bears defense surrendered 326 passing yards and a touchdown to Daniels, who had been nursing a rib injury. Until the final play, they had kept Washington out of the end zone.
After trailing 12-0 late in the third quarter, Chicago rallied to take the lead with just 25 seconds left before Daniels’ game-winning play.
“When you lose a game like that, it’s hard to take,” said Bears head coach Matt Eberflus. “But I’m proud of how they fought back to have a chance to win. That’s important to recognize.”
The defeat dropped Chicago to 4-3, placing them last in the competitive NFC North.
