Max Verstappen has voiced his frustration with Red Bull after the FIA handed down a significant penalty to the team, which could have major implications for their performance in the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
The reigning World Champion was clearly unhappy with how the situation was handled, pointing to communication breakdowns within the team as a key issue.
The FIA’s decision to penalize Red Bull comes after an extensive investigation into the team’s use of an illegal engine modification, which was found to have breached technical regulations.
The modification in question reportedly provided a performance advantage in terms of both power output and fuel efficiency, giving Red Bull an edge that, if not addressed, could have compromised the integrity of the competition.
As part of the penalty, Red Bull has been slapped with a substantial fine and a reduction in their aerodynamic testing time, which could severely affect their car development for the remainder of the season.
The team has also been instructed to remove the illegal modification from their cars, a move that could immediately hamper Verstappen’s dominant performance on the track.
While Red Bull has accepted the FIA’s decision, Verstappen, who has been on an impressive winning streak this season, has been more outspoken about the situation.
Speaking to the media after the announcement, the Dutch driver expressed his anger at the team, suggesting that the penalty was the result of internal miscommunication and poor management of their car’s technical specifications.
“It’s frustrating, because we know we’ve had the best car, but now we’ll have to work harder to regain that advantage,” said Verstappen. “It’s not just about speed; it’s about ensuring the team operates flawlessly at every level, including compliance with the regulations.”
Verstappen’s concerns were echoed by his teammate, Sergio Pérez, who acknowledged the impact the penalty could have on Red Bull’s overall performance.
“It’s a setback for us, but we have to remain focused and adapt quickly,” Pérez stated, alluding to the challenges Red Bull will face in the coming races as their rivals close the gap.
The FIA’s ruling marks a pivotal moment in the 2024 season, with Red Bull now facing significant hurdles to maintain their dominant form.
With Verstappen’s future still bright, the penalty could serve as a wake-up call to the team to tighten their ship, particularly as they continue to battle with teams like Mercedes and Ferrari for the constructors’ title.
