Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it clear: despite the team’s struggles, Mike McCarthy will not be fired this season.
Amid growing speculation surrounding McCarthy’s future, Jones stood firmly behind his head coach, reinforcing his commitment to the coaching staff, even as the Cowboys continue to face challenges.
The Cowboys have had an up-and-down season, and the pressure has been mounting on McCarthy. With the team underperforming in critical games, especially in the postseason, many have begun to question whether McCarthy’s tenure in Dallas might be coming to an end.
Yet, Jones, who is known for his hands-on approach to managing the team, was resolute in his support of McCarthy during a recent interview.
“We’re not in the business of making coaching changes midseason,” Jones said. “Mike is the guy we believe in, and we’re going to continue to focus on getting this team where it needs to be. Our goal hasn’t changed. We’re still in it, and we’re all in this together.”
Jones has been a staunch advocate for stability, often preferring to give his coaches time to implement their systems and develop players, though his patience has been tested in recent years.
McCarthy, who took over as head coach in 2020 after the departure of longtime coach Jason Garrett, has had his fair share of critics.
While the Cowboys made it to the playoffs in McCarthy’s first season, the team failed to advance past the wildcard round.
This year, the team’s inconsistent play, particularly in high-pressure situations, has only fueled doubts. There have been moments of brilliance, such as blowout wins, but also crushing defeats, including a lopsided loss in a marquee primetime matchup.
Many fans and analysts have pointed to questionable decision-making and game management as areas where McCarthy needs to improve.
Jones, however, dismissed these concerns, emphasizing that McCarthy’s leadership and ability to adapt remain key assets for the team.
“Coaches don’t win games on their own. Players play, and Mike is doing everything he can to put them in the best position to succeed,” Jones said.
As the season progresses, it appears McCarthy will remain in his role for the time being, with Jones making it clear that any changes would not come until the end of the season, if at all.
The Cowboys, still in the playoff hunt, will likely continue to face scrutiny until they can prove they are on the right path.
