Rangers Should Consider Selling Matondo, Says Barry Ferguson
In a recent interview with *Ibrox News*, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has suggested that the club should look to sell winger Rabbi Matondo, citing a lack of future potential for the Welsh international at Ibrox.
Matondo, who joined Rangers in the summer of 2022 from German club Schalke for a reported fee of around £2 million, has struggled to make a significant impact in his time at the Scottish giants.
Despite his pace and flair, the 23-year-old has found it difficult to nail down a regular starting spot, with many questioning his consistency and contribution in key matches.
Ferguson, who is highly regarded for his deep understanding of the club’s dynamics, emphasized that the winger’s time at Rangers may have run its course. “I don’t see a future for him at Rangers,” Ferguson said.
“He hasn’t delivered consistently since joining, and it’s clear that he’s not been able to make a lasting impression in terms of performances or results.
Sometimes, it’s better for both the player and the club to part ways if things aren’t working out.”
Matondo’s arrival in 2022 raised hopes among fans who believed the quick, direct winger could bring a new dimension to the team’s attack.
However, his lack of productivity and occasional struggles with the pace and physicality of the Scottish Premiership have led to frustrations among supporters.
In his first season, Matondo scored just a handful of goals and provided minimal assists, which has left many questioning his value to the squad.
The 2023-24 campaign has seen no major improvement, with Matondo rarely featuring in the starting lineup and often relegated to cameo appearances from the bench. This has only fueled Ferguson’s belief that the winger’s future at Rangers is bleak.
Given Rangers’ need to strengthen their squad and make wise investments in players who can make an immediate impact, Ferguson suggested that selling Matondo could free up funds for new recruits.
“Rangers have an important season ahead, and they need players who can contribute to challenging for the title and succeeding in Europe,” Ferguson explained.
“If they can sell Matondo and reinvest that money into a player who is ready to make a difference, it would be a smart move.”
Rangers have yet to make an official decision regarding Matondo’s future, but Ferguson’s comments add to the growing speculation that the winger could be on his way out in the near future.
With several key fixtures ahead, it will be interesting to see if Matondo can prove his worth before any potential transfer talks begin.
