“Pochettino Era Begins with USMNT’s Redemption Win Over Panama”
Mauricio Pochettino began his tenure as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) with a 2-0 victory over Panama, achieving what Gregg Berhalter could not in Copa America.
Christian Pulisic played a key role in the win, setting up the opening goal in the 49th minute. He combined with Brenden Aaronson and delivered a precise cross to AC Milan teammate Yunus Musah, who scored his first goal for the national team in his 42nd appearance. Ricardo Pepi, coming off the bench, secured the win in the final moments with a close-range shot that slipped past goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera.
The USMNT earned a well-deserved win, largely driven by Pulisic’s impact early in the second half. Pochettino, formerly with Chelsea, Tottenham, and PSG, had expressed high praise for Pulisic ahead of the match, calling him “one of the best offensive players in the world.” He emphasized the importance of Pulisic being in top form and building strong club relationships to benefit the national team.
In a tense first half, Panama sensed the pressure weighing on the USMNT as they adjusted to Pochettino’s new system. However, the team emerged revitalized after the break, fueled by the coach’s halftime speech. Goalkeeper Matt Turner also shined with a spectacular double save, embodying the confidence instilled by the new regime.
Just over three months earlier, the USMNT had suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to Panama in Copa America, leading to an early group-stage exit and the dismissal of Berhalter.
