Black Bears Acquire Justin Robinson from Buffalo Bandits in Trade Deal
In a significant move ahead of the 2024 NLL season, the Halifax Thunderbirds (formerly known as the Black Bears) have acquired talented transition player Justin Robinson from the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for future draft picks.
The deal, announced earlier this week, signals the Thunderbirds’ intent to bolster their roster and make a deeper push in the upcoming season.
Robinson, who has spent his entire professional career with the Bandits since being drafted in the first round (8th overall) in the 2018 NLL Draft, brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the Thunderbirds.
Over his five seasons in Buffalo, Robinson has developed into a key contributor, known for his strong defensive play, speed, and ability to push the transition game.
He has tallied impressive stats, including over 30 points in each of the past two seasons, showcasing his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor.
The 25-year-old is expected to play a crucial role for the Thunderbirds, who have been looking to strengthen their transition game after an up-and-down 2023 campaign.
Robinson’s ability to create turnovers and initiate fast breaks is expected to complement Halifax’s already strong defensive unit. His presence on the floor will also help in controlling the tempo of the game, which is vital in the fast-paced NLL.
Halifax’s management has been active in the offseason, making moves to improve the team’s depth and overall performance.
Acquiring Robinson is seen as a pivotal piece in their strategy, as the Thunderbirds look to compete for a championship after narrowly missing the playoffs last season.
“We are thrilled to welcome Justin Robinson to Halifax,” said Thunderbirds general manager Curt Styres. “He is a proven player in this league, and his skills and leadership will be invaluable to our team.
We believe that his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor will be a key asset as we aim to build on our foundation and make a strong playoff push.”
Robinson, who hails from Hamilton, Ontario, has also shown leadership qualities and is known for his team-first attitude.
His experience with one of the most successful franchises in recent years, the Bandits, is expected to bring a level of maturity to the Thunderbirds’ roster.
The Black Bears are hoping that this trade will help them close the gap in a competitive Eastern Conference, where teams like the Bandits and Toronto Rock have dominated in recent seasons.
As the 2024 NLL season draws closer, all eyes will be on Robinson’s impact in his new colors, with high hopes for Halifax’s future.
