“Gilligan Takes Over as Interim Chairman Amid Bennett’s Health-Related Departure”
Gilligan has temporarily taken over from John Bennett, who had been leading the delayed redevelopment of the Copland Stand, after Bennett had to step down due to health reasons.
In the matchday program for the game where Philippe Clement’s team beat Dundee 3-0 in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final, thanks to a Cyriel Dessers double and a James Tavernier penalty, the former director addressed the fans.
He stated, “It’s a great honor and privilege to be appointed interim chairman by the club’s board. The circumstances are unfortunate, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to John Bennett for his dedicated service as chairman. His financial support remains unwavering.
John was part of the initial investment group that took over in 2015, and he has stepped up numerous times since. Everyone at the club, including myself, wishes John a speedy recovery.
“My role as interim chairman is to ensure the executive team has full support and to act as a crucial link between them and the board.
“The club needs stability at this moment, and while the search for a new CEO and permanent chairman continues, achieving that stability will be a key focus of mine.
I’m first and foremost a fan, but being interim chairman requires much more. I’m prepared to prioritize the club’s long-term interests, even if it means making difficult decisions that may not be popular.”
He added, “Today we return to Ibrox, and I’m personally excited about that. Playing at Hampden has been challenging, especially for our staff, and I want to acknowledge them for their hard work.
Without the dedication of our teams in ticketing, commercial, operations, and facilities, we wouldn’t have managed. Rangers is truly grateful for all their efforts.
We’re not entirely finished yet, and we apologize to our fans in the Copland Rear who haven’t returned to their seats.
During my time as interim chairman, I’ll be fully committed to supporting Philippe, his staff, and players in every way possible. I look forward to building a strong relationship with our manager in the coming weeks.”
