“Goncalo Guedes Shines Despite Wolves’ EFL Cup Defeat to Brighton”
Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered another defeat on Wednesday night, this time in the EFL Cup, losing 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion. Gary O’Neil made some adjustments to his starting lineup, but the team couldn’t perform well, leaving the Old Gold with only two wins from six matches in the 2024/25 season.
One standout player, however, was Goncalo Guedes, who seized his opportunity to shine. After spending last season on loan, the Portuguese forward seems to be working his way into O’Neil’s plans with a solid start to the season.
Guedes, who has netted three goals in just four appearances, put in an impressive shift against Brighton. He played 82 minutes, scoring once, taking four shots, making two key passes, and creating a big chance. He also won three out of five ground duels, demonstrating his desire to contribute in every way possible.
His performance certainly makes a case for inclusion in the starting lineup against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday. O’Neil may also consider pairing him with one of Wolves’ standout performers from last season, Matheus Cunha, to form a strong attacking partnership.
Cunha, who earns £60k per week, ranked in the top 4% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90 minutes compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, highlighting his forward-driving impact for Wolves.
