“Young Midfielder Sidelined After Hernia Surgery, Loan Move on Hold”
The 20-year-old player joined the League Two team during the final week of the summer transfer window and made his first appearance in a 2-1 loss against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave the match 20 minutes before the end due to injury and missed the 4-1 defeat to Port Vale a few days later. Newport manager Nelson Jardim initially hoped the injury was minor, but later confirmed that Miley would be out until next month following hernia surgery.
Miley shared a photo on Instagram from his hospital bed on Thursday night, captioning it, “surgery done, back on the mend.” The specific injury was not disclosed until Jardim’s update on Saturday.
Earlier, with his younger brother Lewis out due to a metatarsal fracture and Sandro Tonali suspended, the 20-year-old played in pre-season matches against SpVgg Unterhaching, Hull City, and Urawa Red Diamonds, before making his senior debut at St James’ Park in a game against Girona.
After the 4-0 win over Girona, Eddie Howe praised his performance, saying, “It’s an easy comparison, but it was a typical Lewy Miley display, which is a big compliment. He was composed with the ball and worked hard without it. He was a big help to us.” Howe added that Miley’s tactical awareness, especially for someone so young, was impressive and that the player remained calm and level-headed during a significant moment in his career.
Although he showed promise, Newcastle decided a loan spell would benefit his development, but that plan is currently on hold as he recovers.
