“Morata Eager to Extend Unbeaten Record Against Liverpool as Milan Prepares for Champions League Showdown”
Alvaro Morata is eager to extend his impressive track record against Liverpool as AC Milan gear up to face “one of the best teams in Europe.” The Reds kick off their revamped Champions League campaign with a showdown against their old rivals at San Siro on Tuesday night.
Throughout his career, Morata has never lost to Liverpool, having secured two draws and a win with Chelsea, and later being part of the Atletico Madrid team that knocked the Reds out of the 2019/20 Champions League with victories both home and away.
Now at Milan after his summer transfer from Atletico, Morata is looking forward to reliving the iconic 2005 and 2007 Champions League finals.
“I have great memories of playing against Liverpool, but this is a new chapter,” he said at a Monday press conference in Milan. “We wear the number seven on our sleeves, and it’s a big responsibility.
We need to improve, but there’s a lot of quality in this team, and we can grow. When I signed for this club, I didn’t expect to play my first Champions League match against Liverpool at San Siro.
“This is a game that, in the past, was like a final—it’s a match that has made football history. We’re eager to get out on the pitch.”
Morata continued, “We must believe in ourselves and stay positive. If we don’t have confidence, the people around us won’t either.
We haven’t yet demonstrated how strong we are as a team or shown our individual talent. We all have impressive careers behind us and are ready to prove we can compete at the highest level.”
Milan, seven-time Champions League winners, have only made it past the group stage once in the past ten years, reaching the semi-finals two seasons ago.
Paulo Fonseca took over from Stefano Pioli as manager during the summer, and after a slow start to their Serie A campaign, Saturday’s 4-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Venezia marked their first win after two draws and a defeat.
