“Carragher Speaks Out: Dyche’s Future at Everton Hangs in the Balance”
In his column for The Telegraph (13 September), lifelong Everton fan Jamie Carragher expressed that Sean Dyche’s time at Goodison Park is more tolerated than celebrated, with a general feeling that things could be worse, but also better.
The former England defender is confident Dyche will keep Everton in the Premier League, and even if the team remains without points after their next two games against Aston Villa and Leicester City, sacking Dyche would be the wrong decision.
Carragher reiterated this on X (formerly Twitter) the same day, stating, “Sean Dyche will keep Everton up again this season. But I think this will be his last season at the club. There’s respect from the fans for what he’s done, but not much affection. It’s a marriage of convenience.”
The consensus seems to be that Everton’s struggles are not due to Dyche’s actions but rather in spite of them. Internal issues, such as disarray in the boardroom—compounded by John Textor’s odd remarks about Dyche’s coaching style, which Carragher called “bizarre”—along with a divided squad, appear to overshadow Dyche’s role.
Known for being pragmatic and organized under pressure, Dyche built a reputation for resilience during his time at Burnley. However, in the first three league games this season, Everton has lacked that trademark organization. Dyche, with his experience, understands that the blame will ultimately fall on him.
Whether last season’s positive finish indicates that Dyche can overcome the current challenges remains uncertain, but the “marriage of convenience” reflects the notion that few available managers could do a better job right now.
