“Pickens vs. Surtain: Key Matchup in Steelers-Broncos Showdown”
Much of the discussion surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos has focused on whether quarterback Russell Wilson will get a shot at redemption after aggravating his calf injury.
However, wide receiver George Pickens could be the key factor in Pittsburgh securing their second win of the season. Pickens, a former second-round pick, had a strong showing in the Steelers’ Week 1 victory over the Falcons, recording six receptions for 85 yards. He could have surpassed 100 yards if not for a controversial offensive pass interference call.
Pickens may face a tougher challenge this week, as Denver has former All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II, unlike Atlanta. Surtain, one of the NFL’s top defenders, recently signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension. Last week, he limited Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf to just three catches for 29 yards.
Despite this, Pickens remains confident. “Just be myself, to be honest. I faced Pat Surtain in college, so this isn’t new to me,” Pickens said. “He’s a good player, but there are a lot of good players in the league, and I’m one of them.”
Pickens’ confidence will be put to the test as he lines up against a player of Surtain’s caliber. He appears ready for whatever the Broncos may throw at him. “I just hope they have their plan in place,” Pickens added. “I don’t really care what they’re going to do.”
As for Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation, Justin Fields seems likely to start again. Wilson was limited in practice on Wednesday, while Fields continued to take first-team reps. Pickens believes having a full week with Fields should boost the offense’s chances.
“It’s all about the team coming together to make the plays work, especially since we had more time before Week 1 than we do this week,” Pickens concluded.
Whether it’s Fields or Wilson throwing to him, Pickens is ready for the challenge against Surtain and the Broncos.
