“Anthony Gordon Opens Up on Euro 2024 Disappointment and Focuses on Comeback with Newcastle United”
Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has once again demonstrated why Eddie Howe values his strong mentality so much, as shown by his composed reaction to being left out of England’s squad this summer.
The fan-favorite winger only made one appearance for England during Euro 2024 in Germany before Gareth Southgate decided not to use him further, despite Gordon’s stellar breakout season at St James’ Park.
Speaking to ITV Sport this week, Gordon expressed his frustration, saying, “I was disappointed because I have so much belief in myself. I felt unstoppable, especially after the season I had. I believed no one could defend against me, and I was ready to make an impact and help the team win. To go from what I envisioned to the reality was disappointing.”
When asked if he approached Southgate to question his lack of playing time, Gordon admitted he never intended to make an issue of it. “Not really. I didn’t ask,” he said. “That’s not who I am. I just focus on what I need to do.”
Gordon added that he remained confident on the bench, ready to make a difference if given the chance, though the opportunity never came.
Since returning to Newcastle, Gordon has faced challenges in the club’s early matches, prompting Eddie Howe to keep him on the field as much as possible to help him regain form quickly.
