“Jets Secure Future by Extending Star Slot Cornerback Michael Carter II”
The New York Jets secured a key player for the future on Tuesday night by signing starting slot cornerback Michael Carter II to a three-year, $30.75 million contract extension, with over $19 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This deal could reach $33 million, making Carter the highest-paid nickel corner in the league.
While fans are still waiting for the possible arrival of star edge rusher Haason Reddick, the Jets ensured one of their defensive cornerstones will stay with the team well beyond the 2024 season. Drafted 154th overall in 2021, Carter was entering the final year of his contract.
Notably, this extension marks the first time a 2021 draft pick by GM Joe Douglas has been re-signed. Of the 10 players drafted that year, only four remain with the team.
At 25, Carter excelled in multiple categories in 2023, earning this new contract. The timing is ideal for the Jets as they gear up for Week 1, removing any doubts about Carter’s future. He would have been a top free-agent option at his position, but the Jets were proactive in securing his services before facing a potential price increase next year.
Carter has been a crucial part of the Jets’ elite cornerback unit, alongside stars Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed. With Gardner due for a major contract soon, locking in Carter is a strategic move by Douglas.
Over his last 32 games, Carter has only allowed two touchdown passes and, in 2023, restricted opposing receivers to just 4.8 yards per target.
After dealing with minor injuries in August, Carter is back in practice and is expected to be ready for the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
