Report: As of right now, Newcastle United wants to sign a “outstanding” player on loan.
On the day of the transfer deadline, Newcastle United is open for business in an effort to give Eddie Howe’s team one final boost before the window closes. It is unlikely that Newcastle United’s significant deal will be finalised, though. On Thursday, it was announced that Newcastle was pulling out of the Marc Guehi contract because Paul Mitchell was unable to reach an agreement with Crystal Palace on a price.
For Toon supporters, the Guehi situation has been incredibly aggravating, and it has finally resulted in an uncomfortable transfer window closing day. On deadline day, Newcastle is open to business, but only if the appropriate agreements are made. Even if Eddie Howe is obviously in need of reinforcements, there won’t be any panic buys. Newcastle and James Trafford were linked once more. The goalie is one position where Newcastle is well-stocked. Nevertheless, before the transfer window shuts, that is the position that could be reinforced.
Earlier in the summer, the Magpies attempted to recruit Burnley’s James Trafford, but the deal fell through when Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest arrived. However, Newcastle and Burnley are back in negotiations about Trafford, so keep an eye on him before Friday’s 11 p.m. deadline.
What Newcastle may do on the day of the transfer deadline with their goalkeepers The Daily Mail claims that Newcastle is still hoping to finalise a Trafford deal on the last day of the transfer season. They go on to say that a deal would most likely involve a loan transfer with a future purchase commitment, much like what Newcastle accomplished.
Newcastle’s interest in Trafford, though, might depend on another goalie departing the team on the day of the transfer deadline. Odysseas Vlachodimos may be loaned out, and Anderlecht is reportedly interested, according to the Daily Mail. They do, however, note that the 30-year-old’s pay is currently too much for them.
Trafford’s signing won’t placate Newcastle supporters. Despite Trafford’s “outstanding” skill and immense potential as a custodian, a deal for the 21-year-old won’t change the atmosphere on Tyneside surrounding the club’s transfer business. If Newcastle’s summer activity consists of three goalkeepers arriving – none of which are better than Nick Pope – then serious questions need to be asked.
There is genuine frustration over what has gone on behind the scenes at St James’ Park, with Newcastle on course to not sign anyone who majorly improves Howe’s starting XI. That is a big concern, and leaves Howe under immense pressure to get the most out of the players he has already got. It is even more ridiculous if the most expensive one leaves without playing a single minute, with Newcastle paying £20 million for Vlachodimos. That deal coincides with Elliot Anderson going the other way to Nottingham Forest, as Newcastle scrambled to comply with PSR back in June.
