After defeating a rookie passer in camp, MVP quarterback returns to the Jets.
The New York Jets have expanded their bullpen by one arm. The green and white team cleaned the bench in the quarterback room on Tuesday, August 27, by waiving Andrew Peasley and Adrian Martinez. A day later, the Jets have decided to bring Martinez back into the fold on the practice squad. Brian Costello of the New York Post stated Martinez’s position on the practice squad signifies that he “won the battle with Andrew Peasley to be the third QB on the Jets.”
The final 53-man roster features only two quarterbacks for the Jets: Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor. Gang Green Selected a Little More Experience at the QB3 Position: Most anticipated that Jordan Travis would serve as the team’s third quarterback this season, but his recuperation from a horrific leg fracture sustained at Florida State has proven to be more difficult than anticipated.
The team was left searching for answers at quarterback in order to gain depth, and head coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Travis will stay on the NFI (Non-Football-Injury) list. As a result, Martinez and Peasley were brought in to compete in camp and the preseason. Travis will miss at least the first four games of the season due to his injury.
Although both players are 24 years old, Martinez has greater playing time. This offseason, the former Nebraska and Kansas State standout made headlines as the finest player in the newly established United Football League (UFL). He was chosen for the All-UFL squad, won the MVP award in the championship game, and took home the first MVP award of the regular season.
At the start of training camp, the Jets selected him following an incredible season. Examining the Preseason Statistics Martinez faced up against Peasley in the competition for the QB3 position. Martinez completed 25 out of 47 passes for 270 yards (53% completion percentage) in three preseason games.
Martinez had another advantage on the ground, as he carried the ball six times for 51 yards rushing, while Peasley was less successful with seven carries for just 24 yards. Peasley was more accurate, completing 61% of his passes [20-of-33]. However, he had fewer passing yards with just 181.
Martinez aced the eye test, even though he was not interested in statistics. It didn’t seem like Peasley was ready for this moment. It’s worth noting that neither guy did enough in training camp or the preseason to merit a berth on the 53-man roster. Martinez, however, is being kept off the active roster by the Jets as an intriguing piece for development.
Mike White, or someone with greater experience, could have been a quarterback on New York’s practice squad. The Miami Dolphins cut the former Jets quarterback over the weekend, and because of his league service, he was not susceptible to waivers. Instead of making a strong move, New York chose to stay in the AFC East by signing White to play for the Buffalo Bills.
It doesn’t matter whether the Jets add a young or experienced quarterback to the roster for depth, according to Jets club writer Nick Faria on “Boy Green Daily.” He clarified that Jets supporters are praying that this season’s QB3 doesn’t see the pitch because that would probably imply bad news.
