The transfer of Merino from Real Sociedad to Arsenal is finalised.
Spanish international Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad has officially joined Arsenal. At the Emirates Stadium, the midfield player has agreed to a four-year contract with a one-year option clause. With an additional £4.2 million in add-ons, Arsenal will pay an initial £27.4m. After Riccardo Calafiori and Tommy Setford arrive, Merino becomes Arsenal’s fourth summer acquisition, along with David Raya’s permanent signing.
Merino played in every game as Spain won Euro 2024, including a game-winning goal against Germany in the quarterfinals in the 119th minute after coming on as a replacement.
The 28-year-old’s winning mentality and combative style of play were major draws for Mikel Arteta, who stated: “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now. Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality.” Merino won more duels than any other player in Europe’s top-five leagues last season.
“As everyone witnessed during the summer, Mikel is a winner as well, having helped Spain win the competition with his outstanding efforts throughout the Euros.
“We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”
