“VAR’s Blind Spot: Chelsea’s Goal Allowed Despite Restart Rule Breach”

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) couldn’t overturn Chelsea’s second goal against Wolves on Sunday because the rule prohibits it from reviewing restarts.

Chelsea won 6-2 at Molineux, with Noni Madueke scoring a hat-trick in the second half. Nicolas Jackson initially put Chelsea ahead, but Matheus Cunha equalized for Wolves. Cole Palmer then restored Chelsea’s lead with a goal before halftime, lifting the ball over Jose Sa.

Despite the goal occurring after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez took a kick from a rolling ball, which should have invalidated it, the goal was not reviewed by VAR. This is because VAR only reviews situations where a goal should have been disallowed, a goal wasn’t awarded, penalty decisions, red cards, or cases of mistaken identity.
