Three seasons after being elevated to Select Group Two, the 42-year-old has been a member of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) Select Group One since the 2019–20 season. Four years after making his EFL Cup debut, in August 2019, he was appointed to the top tier. That same month, he presided over Walsall’s 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in the second round. Bankes officiated his first West Ham match that year in the third round of the competition, where Slaven Bilić’s team lost 2-1 to Leicester City in extra time.
He has blown the whistle at 10 Irons games in all, including the Premier League draws against Newcastle United and Bournemouth on the road last season. Outside of the country, Bankes has officiated two international matches and four UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying matches.
Under the lights of London Stadium, the assisting referees will be Marc Perry and Mark Scholes. Both players have extensive experience at the highest level, having run the line in 292 and 245 Premier League matches, respectively. Earlier this month, they assisted referee Craig Pawson as Newcastle defeated Southampton in the division’s opening weekend.
On Wednesday night, John Busby will begin his fourth official assignment. Busby is a seasoned EFL whistler who has assisted with seven EFL Cup games as a fourth official, including three this past season. We won’t be using VAR in this Carabao Cup match.
