“Saints’ Running Back Crisis: Kamara’s Back Injury and Declining Form Raise Red Flags”
In recent days at training camp, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been notably absent.
Earlier in the offseason, one might have speculated that his absence was due to contract demands. Despite being in the midst of a 5-year, $75 million deal and set to earn a substantial amount this season, the 29-year-old Kamara believes he deserves more.
However, his current absence isn’t linked to contract issues. Instead, head coach Dennis Allen has revealed that Kamara is dealing with a back problem.
Allen stated that Kamara’s recent absences are “zero percent” related to his contract and are solely due to the back tightness he’s been experiencing during camp.
Even if Kamara were healthy, his performance has shown signs of decline. In two of the last three seasons, his average yards per carry have dropped below 4.0, and he hasn’t completed a full season since his rookie year.
Between injuries, declining production, and off-field issues, Kamara’s tenure with the Saints might be nearing its end sooner than expected.
Beyond Kamara, the Saints have no clear solution at running back. While Jamaal Williams is beloved by fans and the media for his personality, his on-field performance has declined. Although he led the league in rushing touchdowns with Detroit two seasons ago, this was largely due to his role in a strong offense that gave him most of the red zone and goal-line work. Over his career, Williams has averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry in four out of seven seasons.
Then there’s Kendre Miller, a third-round pick in 2023 who had shown promise but ultimately had a disappointing rookie year and struggled with injuries.
