A former wide receiver with the Patriots has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
T.J. Luther, a wide receiver with the New England Patriots, is being signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, as confirmed by PennLive and initially reported by Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. In response, wide receiver Tarik Black was discarded or injured by the Steelers due to a hamstring injury he sustained on Sunday. Luther was invited to try out for the Steelers two weeks ago, and now that Black is hurt, he will have a chance to demonstrate his skills during training camp.
In the past, Luther has focused primarily on kickoffs. The Gardner-Webb prospect has played with the Patriots and New York Jets after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. The franchise that signed him as an undrafted free agent was the Jets.
Luther was cut by the Patriots in June, despite spending some time on the team’s practice squad during the season. Luther did not make it past the team’s organised team activities. Prior to training camp, he spent the previous few months trying out for teams; following Black’s injury, he now has the opportunity to join the Steelers.
Luther has over 1000 yards at Gardner-Webb in 2022 and was named to the first team of the Big South. The 5-foot-11 receiver not only had a successful senior year but also shown strong testing performance, clocking a 4.50 40-yard sprint. Over the following two weeks, he should be able to join the kick and punt return lines and play both inside and outside the field.
