“Matias Soulé: From Tears to Triumph – The Emotional Rollercoaster Behind His Move to Roma”
Matias Soulé revealed that he was “in tears” over fears that his dream move to Roma might fall apart due to talks with Leicester City. The 21-year-old ultimately secured a transfer to the Stadio Olimpico for €25.6 million, with potential bonuses of up to €4 million, after weeks of negotiations.
Although Leicester City offered a higher bid and better salary, Soulé was determined to join Roma. “I was so anxious that I wouldn’t be able to come here,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “The negotiations dragged on, and I was really worried it would fall through. I even cried at one point. Daniele De Rossi called to reassure me.”
Despite Roma’s financial constraints due to Financial Fair Play, Soulé didn’t feel pressured by the hefty price tag. Instead, he saw it as motivation to prove his worth.
From the outset, Roma coach Daniele De Rossi played a significant role in convincing Soulé that Roma was the right choice. “He really likes me, and I feel the same about him. He’s a hard worker and has a great Argentine accent! He’s instilling a winning mentality in the team.”
Paulo Dybala, Soulé’s former teammate at Juventus and a fellow Argentine, also influenced his decision. “He’s like a big brother to me, guiding me both in football and in life.”
Juventus initially didn’t want to sell Soulé but couldn’t resist the opportunity to make a substantial profit, especially after almost selling him just six months into his loan at Frosinone. “It was painful because I was focused on earning my place at Juve, but then I learned they were planning to sell me to an Arabian club,” Soulé said. Despite new coach Thiago Motta seeing potential in him, the decision to sell had already been made for financial reasons.
