The 32-year-old has been sidelined for all of pre-season so far due to a back injury that required injections. He will miss the last two pre-season matches against Girona and Brest, as well as the Premier League opener against Southampton on August 17.
Wilson is also likely to be unavailable for the match against his former team, AFC Bournemouth, the following weekend, and the second round of the Carabao Cup. However, Howe remains optimistic that the striker will be fit for selection once the transfer window closes.
“His recovery is progressing well,” Howe said about Wilson. “He’s in good spirits, and it’s not a long-term issue. He received an injection for his back, and it’s feeling better.
“However, there is a timeline for his return. I don’t expect him to be ready for Southampton, but hopefully, he’ll be available for the early September games.”
Newcastle are expecting Matt Targett to return to training next week. The left-back has been out of action for over nine months due to an Achilles injury but is nearing full fitness.
“We hope Matt will train next week,” Howe said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen him, so it will be a big boost for him and for us.
“We’re hoping his return to training goes smoothly. Callum is a bit further behind, but not too far off.”
Newcastle are also dealing with injuries to Lewis Miley, who has a metatarsal issue, and Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, who are recovering from ACL injuries. Sandro Tonali is expected to return from his 10-month betting ban on September 1 against Tottenham Hotspur.
