“Liam Hendriks Targets Red Sox Bullpen Return After Successful Live BP Session Post-Tommy John”
Hendriks made significant progress towards joining the Red Sox bullpen on Tuesday afternoon by throwing his first live batting practice session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last summer. He completed the first of three planned live BPs, a precursor to his upcoming rehab assignment.
During the session, Hendriks threw 17 pitches to Danny Jansen and Nick Sogard, while his Red Sox teammates watched from the mound and dugout. Reflecting on the practice, Hendriks said, “It felt alright. I felt like the ball was coming out alright. But right now, I have to put more effort into getting where I need to be.” He acknowledged that early in the season, it takes more effort to reach peak performance, compared to mid-season when it becomes easier.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora outlined Hendriks’ next steps after the session. “It’s huge, man. He’s been working hard,” Cora said. He mentioned that Hendriks had aimed to return around this time and hopefully pitch at the major league level soon. Cora added that after three more live BPs, Hendriks would begin a rehab assignment, which he expects to be a key part of the team’s postseason push.
Hendriks’ next live BP session is scheduled for Saturday, and although he wasn’t entirely satisfied with his performance, he remains determined. “Good enough for everyone else is not good enough for me,” he stated, emphasizing his competitive mindset.
Cora also provided injury updates on Red Sox infielders Vaughn Grissom and Triston Casas, both of whom are continuing their rehab assignments with Triple-A Worcester. Grissom is close to completing his time in the minors, while Casas is working toward playing three consecutive games.
