“Quarterback Shake-Up: Is Justin Fields Poised to Dethrone Russell Wilson?”
The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines this offseason by completely revamping their quarterback roster. Both Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph left in free agency, and Kenny Pickett was unexpectedly traded to the Philadelphia Eagles after reportedly expressing displeasure with the team’s signing of Russell Wilson.
In addition to bringing in Wilson, who struggled in his last two seasons with the Denver Broncos, the Steelers also acquired former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Although many assumed Wilson would be the frontrunner for the starting role, Fields has so far outshone him in Training Camp.
Moreover, Wilson has been sidelined for most of the team’s practices due to a calf injury. This has led to speculation that Fields might emerge as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback, despite not originally being considered for the position. According to a prominent ESPN analyst, this scenario is becoming more plausible.
During an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter discussed how Fields has impressed Pittsburgh’s coaching staff in his short time with the team. However, he also noted that Wilson will likely still have a say in the matter once he returns.
“We need to see how Russ performs when he comes back, but Mike Tomlin initially had Wilson as the frontrunner. Let’s see what happens when Russell returns,” Schefter said. “But the thing is, Justin Fields has improved with each practice, and the team really likes him. He’s a natural leader with strong support, but I still believe that Russell was initially pegged to be the starter. However, when someone is sidelined, it opens the door for others, and Fields has clearly taken advantage of that, impressing everyone with his performance so far.
It’s no surprise considering how much he was loved in Chicago, and now he’s getting a chance to make his mark in Pittsburgh. We’ll see what Wilson has to say about it when he’s back from his calf injury.”
Despite Wilson’s championship background, the Steelers are banking on him to regain his former glory. However, it appears more likely that Fields could soon secure the starting quarterback position in Pittsburgh.
