“From Manchester City to West Ham Woes: Phillips’ Journey and Everton’s Interest”
Phillips joined West Ham in January following weeks of transfer rumors about his future at Manchester City. However, he only made eight Premier League appearances under David Moyes, totaling just 307 minutes, and was dropped from Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Before his move to London Stadium, Newcastle United were strongly linked with the former Leeds United player but couldn’t proceed with the deal due to financial constraints. Phillips’ difficulties in London seemed to justify Newcastle’s decision not to sign him in January.
In an interview with TalkSport, Nolan, who worked with Moyes at West Ham, explained why Phillips struggled to adapt to the club: “We put him in right away thinking it would help him get going,” Nolan said. “It just didn’t work out.
To be fair, he’s a great guy and we all wanted him to succeed. We supported him as much as we could. He realized he had missed a lot of football, and it was tough for him to get back to that level so quickly.”
Phillips is expected to leave Manchester City again this summer. Everton, who recently sold Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50m, have shown interest but will only consider signing Phillips on a temporary basis.
