“Dolphins Star Safety Holland Waits for Extension Amid Tua Talks, Shines Under New Coach”
MIAMI GARDENS — While the Miami Dolphins are eager to extend safety Jevon Holland’s contract, their main focus right now is on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Holland joked on Thursday when asked if he was getting impatient.
“I’m not in charge of the timing for my contract because if I were, I would’ve gotten paid in my rookie year,” he said.
Turning serious, Holland added, “But when it happens, it happens. I can’t control any of that. Whenever they’re ready, I’ll answer the phone, but for now, I’m here every day trying to improve.”
Holland, 24, is entering his fourth NFL season and could be aiming for his first Pro Bowl. It’s early days with first-year coordinator Anthony Weaver, but Holland said working with him is “a blast.”
“I’m having a lot of fun,” Holland said. “He’s a great coach to play for. He’s created an exciting culture and gives us room to grow within it, so I’m really enjoying myself.”
Holland also reminded everyone that he played nickel in college and was a cornerback in high school, including Weaver.
One thing the Dolphins hope Holland avoids is a repeat of his recent introduction to training camp. While trying to tackle Tyreek Hill, Holland ended up airborne and landed awkwardly, resulting in a thigh bruise that essentially ended practice for him on Wednesday.
