“Southampton Makes Bold Move for Celtic’s Matt O’Riley as Transfer Battle Heats Up”
Southampton is the latest club reportedly interested in signing Matt O’Riley. The newly promoted Premier League team, managed by Russell Martin, who previously coached O’Riley at MK Dons, is among many clubs linked with the Celtic midfielder this summer. With funds available to strengthen their squad after promotion, Southampton is looking to bolster their midfield.
O’Riley, 23, has attracted interest from clubs in both England and Italy. Atalanta was the first to make an offer, bidding £15 million, which was promptly rejected by Celtic, who are holding out for over £25 million. Atalanta’s slightly improved second offer was also turned down.
According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Southampton has now made a formal bid, competing with Atalanta. Atalanta views O’Riley as a replacement for Teun Koopmeiners, but they will need to decide whether to increase their offer to match Southampton’s bid.
Other clubs such as Tottenham, West Ham, Leicester, and Juventus have shown interest in the 23-year-old. Atletico Madrid made an approach in January and might re-enter the fray.
Brendan Rodgers, addressing the speculation, stated that O’Riley remains focused and committed. He emphasized that O’Riley’s professionalism and talent naturally attract attention, but there’s nothing new to report. Rodgers highlighted O’Riley’s growth at Celtic and the privilege of playing for the club.
